Never managing to find a love for academia, Regys dropped out of College early and began taking a series of odd jobs in order to pay the bills and keep herself occupied. The latest of these odd jobs was lying her way into a chaperone spot for a youth mission trip to Japan’s mountainous Chubu region. While on a day trip to a local Inari shrine she (against very specific instructions) wanders her way into the shrine’s basement in search of the bathroom, interrupting a ceremony meant to grant a shrine maiden divine messenger status. By accident, she winds up with this power instead of the maiden, becoming a kitsune. It quickly goes to her head, and she dubs herself “Regys” in honor of her newfound divine messenger status. However she struggles when performing and learning magic, and isn’t the most kindly or patient person for locals to come to with their problems, as she insists that they show her the proper respect befitting a messenger of the goddess despite being quite bad at her job. The unfortunate shrine maiden takes Regys under her wing, helping her learn magic and coordinating appointments for citizens to receive help from a divine messenger in the hopes that one day the goddess will reward her diligent efforts.

Life at the shrine is modest, which suits her just fine as she doesn't desire much. Requests are handled on a day-to-day basis and managed by the miko who serve at the shrine. A few of the maidens revere her as a divine messenger, but most see through the fact that it was an accident and treat her like a bad roommate. The hapless maiden who works with her does her best to have everybody get along, at her own expense.
